Understanding the AMC 10 Competition: Awards, Cutoff Scores, and College Application Value

Many students participate in the AMC 10 primarily to enhance their competitiveness in college admissions, especially those planning to transition to or currently attending international schools.

To leverage this academic advantage, it is essential to understand the award structure, cutoff scores, and how different score tiers can be utilized.

AMC 10 Award Structure Explained

AMC 10 awards are globally recognized and hold significant influence both domestically and internationally. The award categories are as follows:

  • Perfect Score Award: Achieving a perfect score of 150.
  • Distinguished Honor Roll (DHR): Top 1% globally.
  • Honor Roll (HR): Top 5% globally.
  • Achievement Roll: Students in 8th grade or below who score 90 or higher.

How Different AMC 10 Awards Benefit College Applications

  • Top 1% (DHR): Serves as a core academic highlight for applying to top-tier universities such as the US Top 20 and UK G5, particularly for STEM, Computer Science, and Economics majors. It is also a strict prerequisite for prestigious summer programs like MIT PRIMES and ROSS.
  • Top 5% (HR): Provides a strong competitive edge for applications to US Top 30–50 universities and non-G5 UK institutions.
  • Qualification for AIME: The AIME is not open to all candidates; registration is only available to students who meet the AMC 10/12 cutoff scores. Qualifying opens the door to a broader platform to demonstrate advanced mathematical competition skills.

Note: This year, new awards for the Top 10% and Top 25% have been introduced. As this is the inaugural year, the specific score thresholds will depend on the official cutoffs set by the organizers.

AMC 10 Cutoff Scores

What are the AMC 10 cutoff scores? While they fluctuate annually, the overall trend shows a consistent increase. Taking 2025 as an example:

  • Global Top 1%: Form A: 136.5, Form B: 133.5 (nearly a perfect score).
  • Global Top 5%: Form A: 112.5, Form B: 105 (requires correctly answering 17–18 questions).
  • AIME Qualification: Form A: 105, Form B: 99 (overlaps with the Top 5% cutoff, but the AIME tests greater depth).

Overall Upward Trend in Cutoffs: The Top 1% cutoff has risen from 121.5 in 2022 to 136.5 in 2025, marking a cumulative increase of 15 points over three years.
