AMC 10/12 Competition Instructions

Information Overview

What are AMC 10/12?

The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are both 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice high school mathematics competitions designed to promote problem-solving skills.

The AMC 10 is for students in 10th grade and below, covering curriculum up to the 10th grade. Students in 10th grade or below and under 17.5 years old on the day of the competition are eligible to participate in the AMC 10.

The AMC 12 covers the entire high school curriculum, including trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry, but not calculus. Students in 12th grade or below and under 19.5 years old on the day of the competition are eligible to participate in the AMC 12.

The AMC 10/12 provides high school students with an opportunity to develop their analytical thinking skills and a positive attitude towards mathematics, which is beneficial for future career development. The AMC 10/12 is the first in a series of competitions that ultimately lead to the International Mathematical Olympiad (see Invitational Competitions).

The AMC 10/12 is also available in Braille (print administration only) and large print (online administration only).

AMC 10/12 Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What material is covered on the AMC 10 and 12?

A. The AMC 10 covers mathematics typically associated with grades 9 and 10. The AMC 10 requires students to have knowledge of elementary algebra; basic geometry, including the Pythagorean theorem, area and volume formulas; elementary number theory; and elementary probability. Excluded are trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry. The AMC 12 covers the entire high school mathematics curriculum, including the above topics as well as trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry, but not calculus.

Q. Who is eligible to take the AMC 10 and AMC 12?

A. Students in 10th grade or below who are under 17.5 years old on the day of the competition and have a passion for problem-solving are eligible for the AMC 10. Students in 12th grade or below who are under 19.5 years old on the day of the competition are eligible for the AMC 12.

Q. Who can proctor the competition?

A. Only competition managers are permitted to proctor. Parents or guardians may not proctor their own children. Beginning in 2022-2023, students will be proctored in person by their competition manager. If there is any suspicion of cheating or unauthorized resources, the competition manager will be contacted. Click here to view the cheating and disqualification policy. For further questions regarding AMC proctoring policies, please contact MAA AMC at amcinfo@maa.org.

Q. Can the AMC 10/12 competition be scheduled at different times for different math classes on the official administration date, or must all students take the competition at the same time?

A. The competition must be administered by the competition manager within its valid competition window. The valid competition window for this cycle is 8:00 AM to 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time (GMT+5) on the official US competition dates.

Competition administrators may choose to administer the competition at different times for different students; however, for the integrity and security of the competition, the MAA AMC strongly encourages competition administrators to administer the competition to all participating students simultaneously.

Q. How do I request a rescore of my answer sheet?

A. Use the AMC 10/12 Rescore Request Form to request a rescore. There is a $35 fee for rescoring each participant's answer sheet. The official answers will be the answers marked on the answer sheet. All participant answer sheets returned for scoring will be recycled 80 days after the AMC 10/12 competition date.

Q. Can a student participate in both competitions?

A. Yes, as long as the student is eligible for the appropriate competition. That is, students in 10th grade or below can participate in both AMC 10 A and AMC 10 B, AMC 12 A and AMC 12 B, etc., while students in 11th or 12th grade can participate in AMC 12 A and AMC 12 B.

Q. What if a school registers for one date and then wants to change their registration to another date?

A. While we discourage changing dates due to potential confusion, date changes are permitted in some cases. If the competition materials have not yet shipped and the timing is within the registration schedule, schools can change the competition date by paying the appropriate registration fee difference (plus any changes to bundles). If a date change is requested to expedite the change, an additional fee must be paid via credit card. Please email amcinfo@maa.org to process this change.
