AMC8 is an excellent way for younger students to explore problem-solving in mathematics beyond the standard school curriculum. Students who enjoy AMC8 may later choose to participate in AMC10 and AMC12 competitions.

Overview of AMC8
AMC8 is a 40-minute competition consisting of 25 multiple-choice questions, specifically designed for students in grade 8 and below. The exam covers middle school math topics, including:
- Counting and probability
- Estimation
- Ratio reasoning
- Elementary geometry (including the Pythagorean theorem)
- Spatial visualization
- Graph interpretation
Some questions may also involve basic algebra topics, such as linear functions, quadratic functions, and coordinate geometry.
Eligibility: Students in grade 8 or below, and under 15.5 years old on the day of the competition.
Competition Schedule: Held annually in January over one week. Each student may participate only once per year.
Which Grades Are Best to Start AMC8 Preparation?
Based on the AMC8 curriculum, the knowledge tested begins at approximately 3rd-grade level. At this stage, students have the foundational math skills and the ability to think independently, making it an ideal starting point for AMC8 preparation.
Grade 3–4 Strategy:
Students are encouraged to start systematic learning of elementary math Olympiad concepts, such as PREAMC8 courses. At this stage, the focus is on developing problem-solving skills and creative approaches, rather than mastering middle school math.
- Goal: Cultivate analytical and logical thinking skills, establish a foundation for AMC8 and future competitions, and gain early experience in math contests.
Grade 5 Strategy:
Students preparing to enter middle school can preview middle school content. Systematic elementary math Olympiad study is optional, as it may not align efficiently with middle school topics.
- Goal: Strengthen basic math knowledge, begin tackling intermediate AMC8 problems, and lay groundwork for middle school math.
Grade 6 Strategy:
For students in their final year of elementary school, AMC8 performance is critical. Systematic study of extended AMC8 courses and focused practice with foundational formulas and problem types is recommended.
- Goal: Achieve top 1% scores, solidify foundational knowledge for middle school math, and prepare thoroughly for future AMC10 competitions.
